Waikiki, which means "spouting water" in Hawaiian, is a neighborhood in the Honolulu metropolitan area, on the island of Oahu. 953,000 people live on Oahu and the metropolitan Honolulu population is just over 900,000. Waikiki is located on the southern part of the island, on the oceanfront of the Pacific. Waikiki luxury hotels are conveniently located throughout the city.
Waikiki is famous for its beautiful beaches. Waikiki Beach is home to the Waikiki Beachboys, whose mission is to instill a love of the water in visitors. They provide surfing lessons, canoe lessons and catamaran instruction. The eight-acre Waikiki Beach Walk offers hotels, restaurants and shopping. Kuhio Beach Park has beach gear for rent, as well as lifeguards on duty. It also offers picnic areas and food vending and is home to the bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku. Duke Kahanamoku was one of the state's most famous residents. An Olympic medallist in swimming, he is also known as the "father of modern surfing". In 1877, Kapiolani Park became Hawaii's first dedicated public space. The park has tennis courts, picnic areas and an exercise course. It is the largest public park in the state.
Every imaginable water activity is available in this beach city. Parasailing, surfing, surf canoeing and body boarding are quite popular. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also favorite activities. Submarine and boat tours are available in Waikiki and provide a unique experience for visitors.
The two-mile long Waikiki Historic Trail begins at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and offers a wonderful walking tour. Interesting historical facts are displayed on twenty-three bronze markers shaped like surfboards all along the trail.
The city has a trolley system made up of three themed lines that have 30 stops. The pink line stops at major shopping outlets, the red line covers historic stops and the green line is the sightseeing line.
The third oldest aquarium in the country, the Waikiki Aquarium, is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and has six areas showcasing aquatic life. These are titled, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands exhibit, the Ocean Aquaculture exhibit, the Edge of the Reef, the Hawaiian Monk Seal exhibit, the Coral Reef exhibit and the Galleries at the Aquarium. Diamond Head Crater Park and State Monument is open to the public daily and has a spectacular view from the top of the crater. Hawaiians refer to the crater as "Lē'ahi". The annual Honolulu Marathon occurs every December and ends in Waikiki.
The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is located on the grounds of the Fort de Russy Military Reservation. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday and admission is free. Exhibits cover the military history of Hawaii. Nearby, Honolulu's Bishop Museum, the largest in the state, houses a large number of exhibits that honor the culture of the Pacific Islands. The museum is closed Tuesdays and Christmas Day.
North of Waikiki is Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is a National Historic Landmark that serves as a memorial to the nearly 2,400 people killed during the December 7, 1941 bombing by the Japanese planes. Pearl Harbor includes interesting and educational sites, including the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park and the Pacific Aviation Museum.
In Waipahu, 18 miles northwest of the city, is Hawaii's Plantation Village. Guided, docent-led tours of this outdoor museum are available Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Self-guided tours are available from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Open since 1992, the 32-building museum has exhibits that describe and show what life on a sugar plantation was like from the 1800s to the 1940s.
The weather in this beautiful resort town is quite mild and pleasant throughout the year. Average lows in the winter are around 66 degrees Fahrenheit with highs averaging 81 degrees. In the spring, the low averages 68 degrees and the high averages 83. Summertime lows are 73 and the highs average out at 88 degrees. The average low in the fall is 73 degrees and the average high reaches 86 degrees.
